The Lady & the Unicorn

A few days ago we gave ourselves a real treat; visited the Art Gallery of NSW to see the Lady & the Unicorn tapestries & to make a good day even better , stopped in to see the exhibition of Australian Textile Arts & Surface Design put on by ATASDA at the Palm House in the Botanical Gardens. This stunning display was a real showcase of colour & talent, covering scarves, jewellery, hats, wall hangings, hand bags & more. Sadly, this exhibition is finished, but…………..there will be another, called ‘Creative Spaces’ Craft & Quilt fair, on at the Darling Harbour Exhibition Centre, from Wednesday 20th. to Sunday 24th. of June. Do go, you’ll love it!

Now, back to the main item; The Lady & The Unicorn. This is a once in a lifetime exhibition, as they have been away from France since their re-discovery in 1841. Originally created around 1500, the six tapestries have survived being rolled up & presumably left to rot in a small castle in central France; only to be recognised as exceptional in both originality & quality by the Inspector General of Historic Monuments. They were restored to their present beautiful condition & may now be seen in custom built surroundings in the Gallery.

Really. these priceless examples of amazing quality & colour should not be missed. It is highly unlikely that we will see them again.

I should note that photography is allowed (without flash!), for personal use only. You can get to within a couple of feet of the tapestries to inspect the detail, which is just fabulous!

The exhibition runs until 24th June & further details may be seen on the Gallery website – https://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/exhibitions/the-lady-and-the-unicorn/?
